The Olympic Mountains are year-round scenic beauties lying across the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. Their majestic beauty is displayed over a hundred miles away in several directions.

The photo above shows a portion of the Olympic Mountains, as seen from Olympia, Washington, the State's Capital. The water in the foreground is the lower part of Puget Sound which laps against the edges and flows through the middle of the City, and into Capital Lake.

The Port of Olympia hosts cargo ships and pleasure craft of all sizes, from all over the world, and is home to the annual Lake Fair and Harbor Days Events.

Majestic Mt. Rainier view from Yelm, WA. Photo by Sue Charles/Native Media © 2002

Mt. Rainier is a beautiful and dominant image in Western Washington. Mt. Rainier has the potential to suddenly become active by volcanic erruption similar to what Mt. St. Helens did in 1980.

If or when this occurs it is predicted to wipe out the numerous towns and cities that surround it with volcanic flow and mud slides, including Puyallup, Orting, Sumner, Graham, Tacoma, Roy, McKenna, and possibly Yelm, and numerous others.

Evacuation plans are in place for some of the closer communities lying at the very feet of Mt. Rainier, but most of the communities put aside thoughts of this dangerous beauty and simply go on with life.

NW Washington has plenty of water associations including Puget Sound, Hood Canal, and scores of lakes, rivers and inlets.

Washington State is bordered by water; on the South by the Columbia River, on the West by the Pacific Ocean, and on the Northwest by the Straight of Juan de Fuca.

The scene above is from the beautiful Hood Canal which leads to the interior of Western Washington and joins the great Puget Sound.
